Division Overview

The Canadian County Sheriff's Office, Communications Division is the first point of contact for emergency services at the Sheriff's Office. We are staffed with 12 full-time and one part-time dispatchers. The Communications Division serves as a vital link between the public and delivery of first responder services. Often referred to as the lifeline to the first responders we dispatch for, the Communications Division is generally the first contact the public will have with the department. 

Our mission is accomplished through the reception and dissemination of information for the purpose of keeping the peace, rendering aid to the public, aiding in the apprehension of law violators and all other tasks that enable the Sheriff to fulfill his statutory and constitutional duties. We are trained to assist all callers and Law Enforcement personnel and are responsible for the deployment and coordination of resources for both emergency and non-emergency requests for assistance.

The Communications Division operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.We also dispatch for some surrounding communities including the: 

  • Calumet Police and Fire Departments
  • Cedar Lake Fire Department
  • EMS
  • Richland Fire Department
  • Sheriff’s Office
  • Union City Police & Fire Departments
  • Other local, state, and federal law enforcement officers in our county

Reporting an Emergency

We respond to calls for service as quickly as possible. Calls that come into the Communication Center are prioritized. Life threatening calls that involve a danger to someone’s personal safety are “Priority 1” calls. When an emergency call comes to the Communication Center, a dispatcher immediately starts gathering the information so we can quickly dispatch deputies or other first responders to the scene. The dispatcher collects additional information from the caller to provide the best possible response. Please know that answering the dispatcher's questions does not delay our response.

Our Communication

Our Communications Center is equipped with radios, telephones, and computers that enable reliable communication to every location in the county. We are in constant contact with the Deputies and other first responders. Dispatchers also process all walk-ins for deputy and first responder requests for service. The Canadian County Sheriff's Office Communications staff is a dedicated group of hard working professionals who can be counted on to assist the citizens of Canadian County whenever help is needed.

Important Information To Keep Near Your Telephone

In an emergency situation seconds can save lives. When a person is encountered with a stressful situation, they may forget simple things such as their address, telephone number, or crossroads. This is information that can assist the Dispatcher in sending the proper response to the right location. It is recommended that you keep a list of important information near your phone to refer to in an emergency situation. This can be especially important if you have children in your home that are being cared for by a sitter or children who are home without a parent’s supervision.

Some items to include on that list are:

  • Address
  • Directions to your house (such as the third house North of "Name Of" road on West Side)
  • Major crossroads near your home
  • Telephone Number

Remember that in an emergency, the number to call in Canadian County for Police, Fire, or EMS is 911.
